Did you know that every, in germany, almost 7 million tons of food are thrown away. Did you know that worldwide, wide more than 2 Billion people suffer from obesity. This and many other issues can be solved with a smart fridge.
The smart fridge helps you to improve your food consumption behaviour and will adapt the suggestions according to your actual health status.
In times of smartphones and wearables you try to track nearly everything in your life to be able to help you to become really fit or life healthy, but with tho most important part he leaves you alone - with the food.
So we came up with the idea to change this and make the fridge to another smart device. We thought it should be possible for the fridge to keep track what is inside and who eats which kind of food and which amount. The smart fridge is a real challenge!
Therefore, we set up an Rasperry PI working with an NFC reader to really fast recognize, who is trying to eat something by simply placing the smartphone in front of the reader.
To keep track of whats inside the fridge we set up a smartphone working as a barcode scanner - when this gets to be a real product, it could be replaced bar a real bar code scanner to make the scanning super fast. But for now, it works quite well.
But recognizing which food you check in or out the fridge is just the beginning. With the help of OCR you could easily figure out when your food expires, but to get real useful, the fridge also has to be aware of the amount of food that is inside. To do this, we integrated a scale into the fridge and used the relayr wunderbar to post the measurements to our server.
Right now, there will be a scale inside of the refrigerator, but we implemented it the way this product should be used - with scales measering the whole fridge and calculating the amount of food that was consumed by the weight difference before you checked something in and afterwards.
So our server uses the code he gets from the barcode scanner and the weight he gets from the scale and uses this information to get the nutrition data from WolframAlpha which are used by our Android App to make those beautiful visualization and analysis.
One of the possible addons:
With the internet of things, it's no more difficult to track data from the items inside of your fridge. We designed a SmartBeerAdapter, so the fridge tells you when your beer is at your preferred temperature. This looks quite useless for the daily use at first sight - but imagine how the fridge could alert you when the dough is ready, and preheat the oven with stored settings.
