ABOUTThis project is about being able to re-purpose old hardware and also finding ingenious way of hacking hardware to do your bidding.
WHYI got tired of always hotspotting from my phone to my other devices like my laptop mainly because it drained a lot of the phone's battery power. So I needed a MiFi which is small and runs on battery power and portable as well. However I had a couple of raspberry pi's sitting around as well as an old USB modem, then I remembered an article I read some years back about how to turn a raspberry pi into a WiFi access point. Instead of going to store to buy a Portable MiFi, I decided to build my self one
HOW IT WORKSThis works by simply using the on-board wifi card on recent raspberry pi's or getting a trusted wifi dongles from trusted sources and turning it into an access point that other devices can connect to. The backhaul can be a USB modem stick or through a LAN cable
PROS- It is portable
- Made use of old hardware
- Works just like a regular router from trusted sources
CONS- Works strictly on mains power
In the future, I plan to make a case for it out of 3D printed parts and also provide battery power so it can work even if there is no electricity available
