Clock towers are no doubt so legendary! but they do require a cost of maintenance for that. Google for 'the clock tower machinery' and you will agree. In fact, there is an engineer in charge of each clock tower, which has to keep a look at the machine on a weekly basis. This is because mechanical clocks may show deviation from the true time if running so long without 'pendulum calibration'.
The same was the case with a 13.6 feet diameter Garden Clock at 'Gurdwara Sri Bhaini Sahib' (see location). Above all, the major challenge was to keep this clock open! The danger was nothing but people themselves! Since the clock is so enormous and at a reachable level, You cannot resist yourself touching it! especially the case with kids :-) Someone moved the clock hand a little, and that little force produced very high torque at the axel, which was sufficient to damage the mechanical gears!
The machinery was replaced many times! until my father S. Pardeep Singh came up with a brilliant idea!
UPGRADING TO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
My father actually had made 3 real CNC machines from old lathe machines. Inspired, we thought to connect the electrical system to the clock.
AUTOCORRECT
If someone moves any clock hand, clock hands come back to the actual time! Quite impressive if you look it with your own eyes :-)
LIGHTS
When the sun sets, lights turn on automatically. The most remarkable thing is the light inside the hands of this clock. As they always keep rotating, the connection to LEDs was a big challenge.
DESIGN
The clock is 13.6 feet in diameter and is set up in the open. The hands weigh a total of 14 kg. The markings on this clock are done in 'Gurmukhi ' numbers (counting in PUNJABI), perfect for a gurdwara.
ANDROID APPLICATION
An app was designed by me specifically for the purpose to control and monitor the clock.
BLUETOOTH connectivity!
The clock can be connected to a smartphone, and we can set the time, date, lighting patterns, and get the data about the temperature and humidity conditions inside, for the last 30 days. We can also check recent power cuts. Thanks to technology!
