We live off-grid in Washington state. We don't have electricity, or water services. Because of this, we store our water in 2 X 275 gallon IBC totes. Because it freezes in the winter, we have to keep our water tanks from freezing. So, I am enclosing them in an insulated shed. The problem is, once they are inside the shed, we won't be able to tell how much water is in each tank.
SolutionMy solution was to use two ultrasonic range detectors to mesure the water level, and then two 915Mhz radios embedded on a board with microcontrollers to measure the water level, then transmit it to a remote receiver that will allow us to monitor things.
Additional tweaksI also need to monitor the shed temperature and turn on a heater when the shed temperature gets below a certain level. The temperature sensor and relay module will also both be controlled by the radio modules.
In addition, everything has to operate on 12V, and we don't have internet other than our cell phones, so I am going to use a Raspberry Pi as a local web server to store and display the results of the monitors and to show the status of the heater.
