This simulation is about PTC protection of power semiconductor (BJT, mosfet of IGBT). In a circuit like the one of figure 1, a lot of heat is generated by both fixed resistors and bipolar transistor. This heat is transferred to an heat sink on which all elements are fixed, and the final heat sink temperature is then measured by a Vishay PTCSL03 leaded through hole components in order to strongly reduce the current passing through the transistor by decreasing strongly the base voltage.
The heat generation is modeled via the supplementary pins created for a simple fixed resistor and a npn transistor. Both netlists will be found in the appendixes of
this project.
The figure 2 represents the PTC resistance variation in time showing the strong resistance increase at a defined temperature (here between 115 and 120°C) (figure 3)
Above this temperature, the current through the load (U2) will be strongly reduced.
