Over the years, I have been interested in and had many hobbies...from woodworking, furniture building, photography, Hifi Electronics, gaming, computers... I'm a home-owner so I had to buy and teach myself how to do many things, so this simple project should have been done 6 years ago when I got into robotics.
My original work surface, a standard solid door placed on top of some bookshelves was completely covered by my robots. My programming desk was in disarray, covered with Amazon and Adafruit shipping boxes. I even had 12 printer paper ream boxes plus 3 multidrawer storage racks filled with robotic, arduino, adafruit, dfrobots, raspberry pi, and you name it "Crowdfunded" projects encroaching from everywhere.
Not to mention, an exercise bike, a treadmill, and DVD movie racks... I couldn't work any more.
My original idea was to build shelves above my work surface and place the completed projects on them, out of the way. Simple idea, the uprights and shelves would be constructed out of cheap 1" x 4" firing/strapping cut to fit my available space. I bought 20 8 foot lengths to start. Everything would ultimately be 12 inches wide, with three lateral cross members to maintain spacing and give structure and support. Basically, just to hold everything together without sagging.
After an hour of moving my robots, "active" projects, and boxes out of this room to a spare bedroom, I could begin the first version as pictured above.
Not bad.... I thought to myself... until my wife asked to look out the windows...that were buried behind my display.....
Next, Version TWO:
Not wanting to waste any wood, I needed to rethink. Again, I removed the boxes and multishelves from this crowded room. Again, taking careful measurements... a long time ago, I learned that working with wood, you must measure twice and cut once. Wood cut too short can't be lengthened.
It was a major transformation, same height, 6 inches narrower, I was able to add 4 more shelves and display more Robots...but I did need to store some boxes elsewhere...
When I say "What Do I Do Next? My wife says..."Clean the Cellar".
Well, it's a start.
