I ran into many many issues with this project.
1. Starting with laser cutting- my Adobe Illustrator version is apparently newer than the one on the computer in the lab so the cutting lines wouldn't register at first. I fixed this problem by opening a new file and transferring all of my old ones into the new one.
2. I also had trouble estimating the size of the holes inside the gears. Some of them ended up being too small- so I went back and re-cut those.
3. The pulling mechanism of the automatic shower curtain also had some issues. I originally only had one string strung throughout the top of the shower curtain and attached to the end gear- but the angle of the pull was too high- it pulled down on the bamboo stick holding it up when I turned it, so I readjusted by adding a supporting string strung through the whole length of the bath curtain- which lessened the torque on the bamboo stick.
4. Finally, I realized that paper and thread as materials look very low fi and not very put together. However, I didn't have time to buy more materials. Also, thread is very thin and doesn't work as well to pull things along.
