Making sense of sounds around us

SoundAlert is an application that allows users to feel safe, secure and more comfortable in knowing they will be alerted to sounds that happen around them. SoundAlert functions through recognizing and analyzing sounds from the environment and converting these into vibrations, on-screen notifications, and flashing lights which can be displayed on a smartphone, smartwatch or other portable device. It is capable of detecting an extensive variety of indoor and outdoor sounds, including fire alarms, door bells, landlines, and home appliances among others.

The story began when Anwar was not able to hear the sound of the alarm clock to wake up for his morning classes, he then decided to create a splash alarm which would splash water on him when it recognised the sound of the alarm. The team then came together and worked on creating a sound recognition platform to make sense of sounds.

The connection with amazon dot came when we needed to extend the range of detection to allow users to be able to get alerts both while they are at home and when they are away. This allows the amazon dot to act as a listening device to receive sounds and then allows the application to process the sounds and alert and notify the users. This connection provides users with alerts to any type of sound anywhere they are.
