My initial plan was to make a peacock that spread its feathers but I messed up and most of my pieces broke when I went home this weekend so I had to improvise a little bit...
Starting from scratch
I had a couple of gears and a laser-cut sun so I decided to link my gears to the sun so that it could set or rise behind a mountain range.
It's a pretty simple mechanism with two gears. My biggest challenge was salvaging enough wooden pieces to make something that worked and had a creative aspect to it. With limited resources, I used a couple of household items to "hack" the gear set up. The dowels were pushed into styrofoam, which actually worked really well since there was relatively low friction yet they were still held in place.
