We have another pandemic on our hands. In 2021, researchers found a 52.7% prevalence of myopia in Chinese children and teenagers, putting them at risk for uncorrectable vision loss. Similar numbers could be found in the US and other countries.
There is a strong need for a personal solution for myopia detection and prevention through a simple integrated web app for the general public with a minimum learning curve.
This project aims to offer such a service known as “Digital Optometrist.” It is a Javascript-based web application that estimates myopic prescription based on a qualitative vision test using any web browser and a web camera.
As my main high-school research project, the alpha version is ready for testing at https://digitaloptometrist.herokuapp.com/ (Chrome browser recommended for now)
So far, it has had hundreds of users from many different countries. The remaining to-do list is still long as I seek to address user feedback and continue to improve the function of the application. More efforts will be put in when we get feedback from the review panelists.
