Such fancy words!
We all have been in a situation where our device’s battery is running low, but we are not at home. A lot of places such as coffee stores, libraries, and airports offer USB ports to users, but these ports might have unfortunate consequences. Nowadays, our mobile devices contain valuable private information such as pictures, banking information, accounts, passwords, IDs, and more, so being “juice jacked” is a serious issue.
“Juice jacking” is a type of cyberattack that involves a charging USB port doubling as a data connection, usually via USB. It often involves installing malware or copying sensitive data from a smartphone, tablet, or other computing device without the user realizing it.
PAW Protector is your “pawtector”, designed to prevent data transfers or syncing between your USB cord and USB charging port. So you can be sure that your information is safe, and your battery is charging fast, let’s be honest, we only want to charge our device enough to leave the place.
PAW Protector has the ability to charge up to 2.4A, including a SmartCharge chip that seamlessly transitions between Apple, Samsung, and universal standards to assure compatibility with your device.
DemonstrationWe have tested PAW Protector how you will probably use it and also with a USB Power Delivery Tester.
- Data isolation
The main purpose of PAW Protector is to disable the USB data transfer paths without affecting the battery charging speed. In the below video, you will see a test where a smartphone is connected to a computer and recognized as an external device, then a PAW Protector is added between the smartphone and the computer, making the smartphone no longer recognized as an external device.
- Smartphonetests
For the smartphone tests we use apps able to measure the current provided through the smartphone USB port, this data may not be exact but is useful for approximations and references.
As shown above, in both scenarios the measurements were similar using or not PAW Protector.
- USB Power Delivery Tester
A USB Power Delivery Tester, as its name indicates is used to test/check the delivery capabilities of USB power sources.
As shown in the below pictures the tests indicate that in both scenarios, with and without the PAW protector, the USB Tester is reading an average of 5V and 1500mA.
So now you know what Paw Protector is, let's get a little more technical.
The “pawtector” knightsPAW Protector relies on three components to accomplish its primary goal of charging your mobile device without transmitting any data, these are:
The TPS2561 is a high-current USB charging controller that allows for more precise limiting and control of the current delivered to devices. In addition to providing fast and safe charging, it also offers protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, and short circuits, ensuring safe operation for both the charger and the connected device.
Furthermore, it has the capability to manage power delivery according to the USB Power Delivery (PD) standards, which is an advanced technology for fast and efficient charging, enabling higher power levels to be supplied to supported devices. When working in conjunction with the TPS2514A, the TPS2561 can adapt to the specific charging needs of the device, enabling optimal and faster charging for those devices that support USB Power Delivery.
The TPS2514A is a USB charging controller used to detect the type of device connected through the USB port. It can identify if the device is for data transfer or if it is a device that requires battery charging. In addition to complying with USB Battery Charging 1.2 (BC1.2) standards, it can detect the optimal current and voltage required for efficient device charging. The TPS2514A ensures that fast-charging compatible devices receive the appropriate current, while data devices receive a lower current. It also provides safety protections such as overcurrent and overheat protection.
The TPD2E001 is an integrated circuit designed to protect sensitive electronic devices from damages caused by electrostatic discharges (ESD) and high-voltage transients. It provides bidirectional protection on data lines and input/output ports, such as USB ports.
