I developed an Android-controlled L.E.D. strip that guides piano playing by lighting piano keys, so that anybody can play piano. As a demo, the attached video shows me playing piano using the device. I built this to teach myself how to play piano. As a student it is expensive to hire a piano tutor ($30~$50/hour), so I felt why not I build a cheap device that does the job. Android app parses MIDI file and then controls IOIO OTG board accordingly that runs L.E.D. strip for piano teaching.
I showed this project to Maker Faire North Carolina, and I unexpectedly discovered a beautiful use of the device. I did not know, but it turns out the device can help two people play piano together. For example, one person plays lower keys and second person plays upper keys. I saw father-daughter playing together, friends playing together, and lovers playing together. I felt so good to help people connect that way. I believe this is the second use of the device.
My hope is, if I get selected for the competition in China, I want to do a little concert during the conference as a demo. With a Chinese attendee I want to play a beautiful piano song using the device, like what I saw at the NC Maker Faire. That way, I want to send a peace message to the Chinese people that we are friends sharing love for music and technology. Thank you.
