Clever Toothbrush is a proposal to use capabilities of SmartEdgeAgile device from AVNET which I have found recently while preparing description for my other project called Fridge Maid. The problem which I faced in that project was the fact that I was not able to use a motion recognition or predictive maintenance which is great asset to this device.
Clever Toothbrush is one of the PoC type of project where I wanted to use SmartEdge device. Maily I would use the motion recognition feature on Brainium platform which would allow us to learn how our teeth brushing preferences and habits look like and what factors could affect it.
Principle of operation is simple: enable motion recognition feature allowing me to capture typical way of brushing my teeth and to understand if I am making any deviation along with its type.
How I did it?I have installed the Smart Edge device in the way that it is hidden in the handle of a toothbrush. In this case it is easy and very ergonomic to run this evaluation.
For this project I have used the Smart Edge Agile device.
I compared two users which in my case was me and my wife.
As you can see below the motion profiles are different. Thanks to the modeling algorithm using the more training sessions I think we can get a very precise model of brushing teeth for each individual at home.
Model results after just 4 training sessions (I did this one by one so my teeth looks great right now :))
In general it looks like this platform is capable to gather thiskind of data and compute it in the way that after certain time we cancreate a very good individual profiles. Once we have it we can use itfor example in following application:
- If we can exchange the brush we can check if all of all ourhome member washes teeth (especially with kids sometimes it can be a problem),
- We can observe if for example changing the tooth paste affectthe way of brushing method,
- We can detect when the brush needs to be replaced (since themovement is changed). Refer to famous comparative picture in Fig.13,
- We can easily verify if the toothbrush is already in use for too long,
- This kind of solution could be potentially a greatplatform for companies producing tooth paste or tooth brushes. Theycan learn how customers use their products based on gender/race/age/country/region etc. This could be fantastic source ofknowledge how to improve or change the existing solutions.
Thank you very much for giving a chance to work with this device.
Potential improvements / next stepsThere are several items that could be done in addition topresented solution:
- Get better models and more training sessions for my entire family,
- Verify if for example changing the tooth paste type can affect the way how we brush teeth,
- Create more ergonomic envelope with better grip.
