We are Ondicap?, a team of 3 students in 2nd year, at LDLC School.
Why are we doing that ?For our 2nd year, the school made the project Inclusive Maker, a project linked with the topic of disabilities. The goal of that project is to create a product which has a few conditions :
- It has to follow the concept of "frugal innovation", which means having a product which is new, without needing many ressources to build it.
- It has to answer one problem for disabled people, and it has to be verified by someone whose problem is fixed thanks to our product.
- It has to be reproducible in a fablab, with the usual machines we find in fablabs.
- It has to be documented and put online on a website (Hackster.io), because it has to be open-source (everybody can use it).
In France, more and more companies have to recruit disabled people, and have to pay an amend if it's not the case.
In that context, if companies are trying to recruit more and more disabled people, they also have to inform their employees about disabilities in general, in order for the future disabled people to better integrate the company.
But in pratice, what's happening ? The companies organize interventions to speak about disabilities, but we're speaking here about interventions where employees just have to listen, and do nothing while the whole intervention ! It can become very boring for the employee, and if he doesn't concentrate enough, he won't remember much of the intervention, and it's not what RH want.
Moreover, there is another problem : in France, when we're talking about disabilities, the first thing which comes in mind in people's head is wheelchairs, mobility problems, etc... instead of invisible disabilities, which represents 85% of declared disabilities in France ! And w
And that's why we're here.
What's the solution we're proposing ?So, there are 2 problems : the miscommunication about invisible disabilities, and the boring interventions we can see in companies.
So what's Ondicap?, our product ?
It's a board game, serious game type ! The game is only composed of cards, with questions of which the topic is invisible disabilities only. The goal of that product is to raise awareness about disabilities, and especially awareness about invisible awareness, and
How to play it ?
There are 2 teams of at least 2 players in each if there is no Game Master, and 2 teams of 1 if there is a Game Master. The game is composed of 5 types of cards, which are Question Type 1, Question Type 2, Question Type 3, Bonus and Challenge.
Each team will have to, during his turn, choose a level of difficulty which corresponds to the type of question (the Question Type 3 are the hardest to answer, while the Question Type 1 are the easier to answer).
After choosing the difficulty, one member of the team or the Game Master has to ask the question, and the rest of team has to answer it. If the team guesses right, they win Points, and if they guessed wrong, they lose Points.
But there are Question Type cards which can make you do more than losing or winning points : they can make you draw Challenge or Bonus cards, depending of if you guessed right or wrong.
Bonus cards are separated in 2 categories, some are immediate effect (often have a link with points), and some are like jokers to keep secret, and have to be used at the right timing.
Challenge cards are cards which make you do things, like asking a question with a pencil in your mouth for exemple. Like for the question type cards, you'll win or lose points depending of if you passed the challenge or not.
The goal of the game is simple : the game is finished when every question type card have been asked, and the winner team is the team with the most number of points at the end.
Why do we think the solution we're proposing is relevant ?As said earlier, our goal is to raise awareness about invisible disabilities, and make talks more interesting for employees !
For the awareness part, we're fixing it by asking questions about disabilities. Whatever if the person answering is right or wrong, every person playing the game is learning ! We also tried to accentuate the empathy of people about disabled people, by trying to make them feel what they're going throught, thanks to the challenge type cards. These cards are trying to reproduct the situations that disabled people can live everyday.
For the part about making them interested, that's the reason we added so many different type of cards, different rules, and all things about points, teams, etc... By adding more and more rules and cards, we tried to add every component which can make a game interesting, like strategies, competitiveness, etc... The more things there are to do, the more fun and enjoying the game will be ! By making employees play actively during the intervention, they will be concentrated, and will learn a lot while playing !
What can be improved ?
Of course, this game isn't perfect. We're only 3 students in a school, it's the first time we're doing a board game, so a lot of things have to be improved, because of the lack of testing. We tried to see which points in the game are the more important to improve :
- The most important is the balancing issues. Some questions of difficulty 1 are maybe too hard, and some difficulty 3 are maybe too easy to guess. The questions will maybe need to be of another difficulty, depending of the questions.
- We tried to make a lot of different cards, but by doing multiple Challenge cards, or multiple Bonus cards, there are maybe situations where some cards shouldn't be used, or are too broken compared to the other cards. So some Challenge or Bonus cards maybe have to be deleted.
We hope you'll find that game interesting, if needed, don't hesitate to contact us !
