A DIY Modified Cassette Player Synth
Rich Bernett's Cassettone synth combines a modified cassette player with a custom-built case.
If you have ever wondered about making DIY modified cassette player synth, don't worry, Rich Bernett from The Sound of Machine has explained how to create your own Cassettone Mk1. The project is basically a DIY synth that combines a modified cassette player with a custom build case.
It moreover enables the user to control the pitch of the cassette with the keys that can be seen in the figure. Now, each key can speed up or slow down the speed of the motor of the player. It depends on the position of each of the dials which are placed above each key. To connect it to an audio workstation or amplifier, you will see an audio output port at the back of the machine that allows you to feed the signal.
The main idea was to only play the motor of the cassette when the keys are pressed. But in the first prototype, in order to control the main pitch which played all the time, a master pitch control was added on the side. But in the final prototype, it can be seen that the motor halts when keys are not pressed. This will give you the option to add and remove the master pitch control from your model.
In the video, Bernett gives the complete details on building the modified cassette player synth. He even shared the details of tools and parts along with a schematic which will be needed to make one.
