Aurea Technologies' Shine Turbine Is a 40W Clean-Energy Generator the Size of a Water Bottle

Boasting a claimed two-minute setup, the Shine Turbine could prove great for off-the-grid projects — or adventures.

Canadian clean-tech startup Aurea Technologies has launched a crowdfunding campaign for Shine, a functional wind turbine which packs down into a backpack — or large pocket — with a claimed two-minute setup time.

"The Shine Turbine is the ultra-compact, highly efficient, portable wind charger that lets you use the wind to rapidly create your own power to charge all your handheld devices - from your phone to your camera — anytime, anywhere the wind blows," claims Aurea's Catherine Moreira. "From exploring coasts to navigating plains to scaling mountains, all you need to do is set up Shine and in under two minutes you’ll have a wind generator to power your adventures."

Weighing just 3lb and with an integrated 12Ah battery, usable while the turbine is in packed-away mode, Shine is said to offer IP54 resistance against the elements and to produce usable energy in wind speeds between 8 and 28 miles per hour. At its peak, the system offers 40W of generation — and at a billed maximum noise level of 50dB.

"Shine is for anyone who wants to charge handheld devices while disconnected from the energy grid," says Moreira. "The turbine is perfect for keeping electronics charged while backpacking, camping, RVing, fishing, hunting, remote working, and more."

"We have full confidence in our manufacturing process and have done extensive planning to set realistic expectations for meeting delivery timelines. With production happening locally in Atlantic Canada, we are able to oversee the entire manufacturing process. This allows us to ensure product quality and immediately solve any issues."

The Shine is now funding on Kickstarter, with rewards starting at CA$290 (around $231) for a single Shine kit with drawstring bag — a claimed 40 percent discount off the eventual retail price. All rewards are expected to ship in October this year.
