Bringing a 1980s BBS Back to Life With the Raspberry Pi

If you began computing in the ‘80s or early ‘90s, you may have simply used it alone, or perhaps you logged onto online communities such as CompuServe, AOL, or one or several BBSes.

These bulletin board systems, though perhaps not as well known as the larger services, could be run on someone’s home computer, just waiting for someone else to call in, and could host files, play games, or even handle multiple users if the host had multiple phone lines.

Today though, BBSes are mostly a thing of the past, especially given that many people don’t even actually have a land line. Now, however, using a Raspberry Pi and TCPser to emulate a Hayes Modem, a Sysop (system administrator) with the handle of “Skip” has revived a BBS called Dura-Europas after being offline since 1993.
