If you’ve ever had the pleasure of constructing your own CNC machine, whether from scratch or from a kit, you may have noticed that while the mechanical portion was (hopefully) well-built, the electronics may seem somewhat thrown together. While this normally works, any time you’re dealing with an electrical system around dust and vibration, you’d really like this part of your build to be well thought out.

For that purpose, Buildbotics is now on Kickstarter as a rugged, open source controller. Physically, it’s housed inside a 190 x 157 x 70mm (7 1/2" x 6 3/16" x 2 3/4") box, and is built as a rugged, fanless enclosure meant for use in harsh environments. It can control four axes, and includes an integrated wiring system with accommodations for a power supply, motors, and accessories such as a dust collection or coolant system.

Software-wise, the device features a web interface, meaning you can monitor and control it from any computer or web-connected gadget. Additionally, it can take advantage of the CAMotics CNC simulator for even better feedback on machine characteristics, and can even use a webcam for live video! For more direct control, it can be controlled via a USB gamepad, and gives simple feedback through an integrated LCD screen.

Buildbotics’ open source controller looks like really solid solution for controlling CNC routers, laser cutters, and eventually 3D printers and plasma cutters as well. If you have a CNC build or retrofit in your future, it’s certainly worth checking out!
