BurgessWorld's Dual-Mode BM83 Breakout Aims to Simplify Your Next Bluetooth Audio Project Build

Built to be breadboard-friendly, the breakout board offers easy access to every pin and feature of Microchip's BM83 Bluetooth module.

BurgessWorld Custom Electronics has launched a handy development board for Bluetooth 5 audio projects, based around the Microchip BM83 dual-mode Bluetooth audio module.

"Design your own custom applications with custom firmware and configure the BM83 to your own specifications with Microchip's custom development applications," the company writes of the board, which can have its headers populated for jumper wire or breadboard use. "[The] BM83 model BM83SM1-00TA ships with latest AT v1.0 firmware but can easily be flashed with any Microchip firmware designed for the BM83. Firmware update can be performed via a standard USB-Serial adapter or by wiring up a USB breakout module."

Microchip's BM83, which sits at the heart of the board, is a Bluetooth 5.0-certified module designed with audio work in mind. Based on an on-board Bluetooth stack and audio profile design, the module supports 24-bit/96kHz audio and includes its own digital signal processor (DSP) with support for AAC and SBC codecs.

Actually using the module in your own project, however, requires working with surface-mount components — which is where BurgessWorld's breakout board comes in. The board holds a single BM83 and breaks out all the pins to standard 2.54mm spacing, includes power and reset buttons, status LEDs, offers a lithium-polymer (LiPo) battery connector, a 2A battery output, 5V charger connector, test-mode header, and a six-pin connector for an I2S codec/amplifier module offering 25W maximum stereo output.

The board is available now on the BurgessWorld Custom Electronics Tindie store at $44.95; design and firmware files are available on GitHub under an unspecified license.
