Combine Iron Man and Aquaman with this Underwater Flying Suit

Sure, Iron Man is cool and all, but his suit only allows him to fly through the air. There really isn’t a whole lot up there in the sky, the real adventure is underwater. That’s where Aquaman has the advantage, with powers that give him the ability to explore the ocean’s depths. Of course, if you weren’t born with those superhuman powers, you may have to settle for Tony Stark’s method of using technology as a substitute.

That’s what Ryan and David over at Eclectical Engineering have done, by creating a motorized underwater “flying” suit. This is essentially a wetsuit with an electric motor for propulsion strapped to each limb. A backpack houses a battery pack to provide power. Ryan and David were able to achieve a top speed of more than 6mph using the suit — that’s about how fast Michael Phelps can swim.

There were, of course, some big challenges and dangers in developing the suit. There is the simple danger of just sinking and drowning, as all of that gear is pretty heavy. And, as you’re probably aware, electronics and water don’t get along too well. All of the components had to be completely sealed to make them waterproof.

The build and demonstration video, on Eclectical Engineering’s YouTube channel, was sponsored by Google’s Making and Science Team. There, you’re likely to find other projects that may not always be practical, but are definitely fun. However, you’re strongly encouraged not to build this suit yourself, because of the dangers involved.
