David Wynne's BMO TV Is Plucked Straight Out of — and Automatically Plays — Adventure Time
Looking just like his in-universe counterpart, this BMO TV means you can catch up on Adventure Time whenever you like.
Maker David Wynne has taken Adventure Time's BMO off the screen and into his house — turning the cute games system into a TV which automatically plays show episodes using an internal Raspberry Pi.
"It features an on/off button for the screen and sound, a 7” screen, and a potentiometer for the sound. It's a Raspberry Pi Zero with Raspberry Pi video looper installed [inside]," Wynne explains.
Inspiration for the project came from Brandon Withrow's earlier Simpsons TV, a 3D-printed replica of the TV in the family's living room which automatically plays the first 11 seasons of the show using a Raspberry PI Zero and a 32GB microSD card. Where Withrow designed and 3D printed the TV set, though, Wynne opted to take a shortcut: Purchasing an off-the-shelf Nintendo Switch dock already in BMO's shape.
Like Withrow's project, the system is designed to be left permanently switched on. The Raspberry Pi runs through a directory of video files, stored on a USB flash drive, and plays one after another automatically. When you're not looking to catch up on the show, a power button — integrated into BMO's controls — turns off the screen and sound but leaves the Raspberry Pi running in the background.
"The only improvement I need to make is for power," Wynne notes. "[It] currently uses two power cords: One for the Pi and the other for the screen."
Wynne's full build log is available on Imgur, with more details to be found in the project's Reddit thread — along with the promise that Wynne has "an additional project with this little BMO" planned.
