DIY Dual-Screen Laptop Setup
Matt of DIY Perks shows off how to make your own dual-screen laptop setup.
Laptops, as Matt of DIY Perks describes them, “are superb devices that allow you to get a huge array of tasks done.” Unfortunately, there are a few compromises, including the fact that you need to look down when using one—not ideal for your neck—and that they only have one screen. While most accept these pitfalls as the price of portability, Matt decided to take matters into his own hands, creating a dual-screen setup that positions the second display closer to eye-level than traditional rigs.
The build consists of a small LCD panel that can be salvaged from another laptop, or purchased on eBay or the like, along with a driver board. The new parts are connected to the main laptop via a 3D-printed hinge system and Velcro.
The hinge system is designed as so to create room for the driver board, as well a USB-C battery pack when folded up into a Z shape, and since it’s attached with Velcro it can be detached as needed. One interesting element here is that he’s using a small board that converts the USB-C input into the needed 12V power for the screen, which could be a useful idea for many other projects.
Although Matt admits that it’s not the slimmest build in the world, it does look very useful for those willing to lug the attachment around!
