E Ink Announces Next-Generation Kaleido 3 Color ePaper Display Panels for Portable Devices
New panels offer a claimed 30 percent boosted color saturation, plus a new frontlight system with lower levels of blue light.
ePaper display specialist E Ink has announced another batch of next-generation full-color sunlight-readable displays, this time targeting portable devices: the Kaleido 3 family.
"The color eReader with E Ink Kaleido technology has received wide support and recognition from many customers since its release," claims E Ink chief executive Johnson Lee of the company's previous-generation display family. "E Ink continues to innovate color ePaper, and with E Ink Kaleido 3, we’ve enhanced the vividness of the colors, improved the module design and created a healthier visual reading experience. We are excited to see this new technology roll out in customer products."
The Kaleido 3-based displays, which use monochrome electrophoretic ePaper technology with a color filter array on top, are claimed to offer a 30 percent boost to color saturation compared to the previous-generation E Ink Kaleido Plus range.
At the same time, the new screens integrated the company's ComfortGaze front-lighting technology — offering, it claims, a reduction to both Blue Light Ratio (BLR) and the so-called Blue Light Toxicity Factor (BLTF) compared to its predecessors.
The Kaleido 3 family comes a fortnight after E Ink launched its large-format E Ink Gallery Plus range, designed for color digital signage. Where the smallest Gallery Plus display has a 13.3" diagonal, however, that's the size of the largest Kaleido 3 — which is also available in 7.8" and 10.3" variants for portable devices.
E Ink has yet to reveal pricing for the Kaleido 3 range, nor has it confirmed any design wins from its customers — but the company is to exhibit the new panels at Touch Taiwan 2022 from April 27-29 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, booth #M802 on the fourth floor.
