Edge Impulse Adds Arduino Nicla Sense ME Support for Edge AI Motion and Environment Projects

Designed in partnership with Bosch for tinyML motion and environmental sensing, the Nicla Sense ME now includes Edge Impulse compatibility.

Edge artificial intelligence (edge AI) and tiny machine learning (tinyML) expert Edge Impulse has announced support for Arduino's Nicla Sense ME ultra-compact development board, promising full support for the device's integrated sensors.

Arduino launched the Nicla Sense ME, designed in partnership with Bosch's sensor division, back in September last year. The first in the Nicla form factor, a stamp-like ultra-compact design which nevertheless crams a USB port and castellated general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins on a board designed for breadboard use or surface-mounting as a module, the Nicla Sense ME aims at edge AI work with a range of embedded Bosch Sensortec hardware connected to a Nordic Semi nRF52832 system-on-chip with a Synopsys DesignWare ARC EM4 coprocessor.

"Its small size and robust design," Edge Impulse's Jenny Plunkett explains of the compact development board, "make it suitable for projects that need to combine sensor fusion and AI capabilities on the edge, thanks to a strong computational power and low-consumption combination that can even lead to stand-alone applications when battery operated."

Edge Impulse's support for the board extends to the four Bosch Sensortec sensors fitted as standard β€” the BHI260AP motion sensor, BMM150 magnetometer, BMP390 pressure sensor, and BME688 four-in-one gas and environment sensor. The company's quick-start guide walks through flashing the Nicla Sense ME with the Edge Impulse firmware for data collection and inference.

"Once you have collected enough data samples from your desired sensor," says Plunkett, "you can follow the building a continuous motion recognition system tutorial to develop and deploy a machine learning model using one of the many Bosch sensors on the Nicla Sense ME."

More details on the support and how to get started are available on the Edge Impulse documentation site; the Nicla Sense ME is available on the Arduino Store for $82.80.
