Erwin Ried's FlippenHeimer Gives the Flipper Zero Pocket Multi-Tool Radiation Monitoring Powers
Track gamma and beta radiation wherever you are using this clever accessory for the Flipper Zero.
Maker Erwin Ried has designed an add-on for the popular Flipper Zero electronic multi-tool and virtual pet which brings a whole new capability to its repertoire: nuclear radiation measurements using a Geiger-Müller tube.
"I love my Flipper Zero, I want to maximize its utility in every possible way," Ried writes of his creation. "I use the great Akopachov's Authenticator every day and Mayhem v2 adds everything else I need… However, living in Norway, in close proximity to Russia, there's one essential addition that I believe should be considered: a Geiger Counter."
Featured in our latest Tech Highlight video, the Flipper Zero combines handy functions like sub-gigahertz and Bluetooth radios and Near-Field Communication (NFC) with a pocketable Tamagotchi-inspired virtual pet — one you keep happy by "feeding" interesting signals and measurements, whether from the radios, the infrared port, or the general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins to the top.
It's to these pins that Ried's Geiger counter accessory connects. Drawing its power from the Flipper's own internal battery and displaying its measurements on-screen, the tube is able to pick up both bet and gamma radiation and map the changes over time. "It's the perfect symbiosis, an essential addition to my toolkit," Ried says.
The add-on is now being sold on Ried's Tindie store at $29.99 for a PCB with the surface-mount components pre-soldered but no other parts, $109.99 for a complete kit, or $189.99 fully-assembled and calibrated and with a 3D-printed housing to protect the tube.
