It’s happen to all of us: You’re scrolling through landscape pictures on your phone and then suddenly a portrait image appears along with those infamous black bars on both sides. Luckily, Timothy Giles has devised a solution to this annoying problem in the form of a rotating digital frame.

The aptly named FlipFrame was brought to life using a discarded 27-inch LCD TV along with some 3D-printed parts and laser-cut plywood. A Raspberry Pi hosts and displays the images, then uses an Arduino with a stepper shield to smoothly rotate the screen depending on the layout of the photo.

Intrigued? You can find more information on the FlipFrame here, including all of the necessary code and mechanical design files if you want to build your own!
