Flipper Zero, the "Hacker's Multi-Tool," Gets an Official App Store for Easier Customization
An updated mobile app now makes it possible to find and install free apps on the stock Flipper Zero firmware.
Flipper Devices has announced the launch of an "app store," as it looks to make it's hacker's multi-tool Flipper Zero devices easier for users to customize.
"With the launch of Flipper Apps, we're empowering users to customize their Flipper Zero by adding the features they need," claims Pavel Zhovner, co-founder and chief executive officer of Flipper Devices. "Although it was a significant challenge given our device's energy-efficient hardware and lack of a full-fledged operation system, we are delighted to have achieved this. What's more, it's now available on all 350,000 devices we've ever sold."
For clarity, app support on the Flipper Zero isn't new: while earlier revisions required apps to be built directly into the firmware, making them available only under custom firmware, a later release introduced support for loading arbitrary apps from files on the microSD card. It's this feature the app store exposes — and the applications being made available are culled from existing community contribution.
These apps, all available for free download, include a time-based one-time pad (TOTP) authentication dongle system, support for reading environmental sensors over the Flipper Zero's General-Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) header, Xbox One control, and fuzzers for iButton and RFID devices. There are also a selection of games, ranging from blackjack to a Minesweeper clone.
At launch, the Flipper app store isn't exposed on the web; instead, apps are made available on the Flipper Zero's companion mobile app. Thus far, there's no way for a developer to monetize their contributions: everything in the app is downloadable free of charge, and automatically sent to the linked Flipper via Bluetooth.
Flipper Zero users can update to the latest mobile app now to receive the app store functionality; those without a Flipper Zero can learn more about the device on the official website.
