Though drumming in one form or another is perhaps the simplest instrument available to man. If you want to play a full drum kit, it takes up a lot of room, can be expensive, and will likely disturb your neighbors. Practice pads or electronic drum kits are one solution, but Freedrum takes this concept to an entirely new level with Bluetooth sensors that attach to your existing drumsticks, as well as to your feet for kick pedal control.
These sensors integrate with iOS devices via Bluetooth MIDI. Though it technically works with Android, there is slight timing delay, so they’re not supporting those devices at this time. Still, if you have the popper hardware, this looks like a really neat and portable alternative to a full kit.
Freedrum’s enclosure houses a PCB with a gyroscope that detects movements and interprets them as hits on a drum. Together, with the sensed force and a few other magic parameters, it is translated into MIDI. This signal is sent over Bluetooth to the connected app, like Garageband on an iPhone, which then plays the actual sound using headphones or its onboard speakers.
