If you played with the original Game Boy as a child, you probably remember fondly such games such as Tetris and Super Mario Land. While these games were lots of fun, the Game Boy’s small black-and-white screen, limited number of buttons, and batteries that needed to be replaced over and over don’t really live up to more modern systems, or even smartphones for that matter.

On the other hand, it did feature physical buttons, instead of the touchscreens that attempt to substitute for this functionality. For the best of both worlds, the GameShell, now on Kickstarter, features the excellent user interface of the Game Boy (along with a few extra buttons), a color screen, and the ability to play a multitude of indie and retro games.

The device is powered by a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU, along with 512MB of SDRAM and a micro SD card for up to 32GB of storage, specs that would have been unheard of during the original Game Boy’s heyday. Additionally, it boasts a rechargeable battery, and comes as a modular plug-and-play kit. You can even print your own case if you so desire.

Finally, the GameShell acts as a dev kit running Linux, and the keypad is programmable, allowing for a wide range of customization of not only the physical hardware, but the software as well.
