What started as an April Fools' Day prank has become a reality six months later. To mark the Kitano Tea Ceremony, Google Japan has released its Gboard Yunomi, which has become a functional keyboard/cup users can build and even drink their beverage of choice. The keyboard uses two different PCBs — 12 strips for the keys and a round/diagonal PCB for the base, which packs an ATmega32U4-AU microcontroller. All of the strips are wired together and connected to the base plate at the bottom of the keyboard.

Google does provide the necessary STL file for 3D printing a jig that can hold all of the strip PCBs in place while connecting the bottom plate if needed. The next step involves soldering the switches in place, and although Google went with Kaihl Choc’s, users can choose linear, tactile, or clicky versions depending on preference. It should also be noted that Choc’s require specific keycaps in a low profile, which can be found at MKUltra and other specialty websites.

The Gboard Yunomi features an ATmega32U4-AU microcontroller, 58 (SSI) keys, Kailh low-profile Choc switches and a USB Type-C port. And yes, you can drink tea out of its ceramic 125mL cup. (📷: Google Japan GitHub)

For drinking, Google used a ceramic cup insert that will keep beverages warm or cold while you type. It’s probably not in users’ best interests to drink and type simultaneously, or if that’s even possible using one hand. Regardless, Google has uploaded a detailed walkthrough of the Gboard Yunomi on its GitHub page.
