Joey Castillo's "Sensor Watch" SAO Brings a Little Casio-Inspired Display to Any Compatible Badge
It's not a Sensor Watch, but it is a segment-based display programmable over I2C from the badge of your choice.
Joey Castillo, of Oddly Specific Objects fame, is looking to put a little Sensor Watch technology on your favorite badge — with the "Sensor Watch" Simple Add-On (SAO).
"The 'Sensor Watch' SAO is not Sensor Watch — hence the quotes — but it is an I2C segment LCD driver that’s easy to control with MicroPython," Castillo explains of his latest creation. "To get folks started, I have once again put copious documentation on the back side."
The SAO is inspired by Castillo's own Sensor Watch and later Sensor Watch Pro, drop-in replacement boards for the classic Casio F-91W wristwatch — turning it from a simple alarm chronograph into a smartwatch with more alarms, stopwatches, temperature monitoring, and even a solar orrery, with the Sensor Watch Pro adding an infrared sensor capable of light monitoring or data reception and optional accelerometer add-on.
The "Sensor Watch" SAO, though, isn't a Sensor Watch — but it could be a watch, if you wanted it to be, thanks to its six-digit seven-segment LCD, which is accessible to the host watch over I2C. Designed for use with MicroPython, the badge add-on includes a detailed silkscreen layer on the rear that includes pin-out and communication details — making it easy to pick up and use even if you have no other documentation to hand.
