Makeblock has launched its xTool M1 hybrid laser and blade cutter – a desktop unit designed for precision engraving and cutting nearly any material, including fabrics. The machine features laser and blade heads and can cut stone, metals, plastics, wood, and more, as well as engrave those same materials and even food if needed.

Instead of a CO2 laser, the xTool M1 is outfitted with a laser diode to save on cost, as the former requires special cooling to use and is rather bulky for a desktop machine. That said, it utilizes a FAC lens to make the laser spot smaller, from 0.15 x 0.18mm to 0.08 x 0.08mm, allowing for fine details and precision cuts.

“With this Compressed Spot Technology, the same power focused on a small point achieves a higher cutting ability and narrow cutting edge, making it possible for a 5W laser module to cut through 4mm basswood in a single pass,” the Makeblock team notes on their Kickstarter page.

The hybrid machine also has a 16MP ultra-wide HD camera for visual processing images, designs, and drawings from nearly any surface, making it easy to cut and engrave. For more than one project, the xTool M1 takes advantage of AI for batch processing and autofocusing and automatically detects the shape of the material before initiating the order.

Makeblock is currently crowdfunding the xTool M1 on Kickstarter with pledges starting at $699, which gets you the engraver/cutter, sample materials, light and strong cutting mats, replacement blades and exhaust kit.
