Microsoft Expands Its Copilot+ Windows AI Platform to the Latest AMD, Intel Chips
No longer a Qualcomm exclusive, Copilot+ will be available to Windows users with the latest AMD and Intel chips starting in November.
Microsoft has announced that it will be expanding Copilot+, its artificial intelligence (AI) services for Windows users, to cover the latest chips from AMD and Intel — meaning it will no longer be exclusive to Qualcomm's Snapdragon X parts.
"Today marks the next step in our journey as the Copilot+ PC portfolio expands with the introduction of new silicon technology — AMD Ryzen AI 300 series and Intel Core Ultra 200V series," Microsoft's Pavan Davuluri explains. "This growth underscores our commitment to innovation, providing customers with leading AI experiences, fast performance, long battery life, seamless connectivity, enhanced security and personalized productivity. Together with our ecosystem partners, we are all in on Copilot+ PCs."
Previously, Microsoft's Copilot+ functionality — which is to include a divisive feature dubbed Recall that keeps a constant searchable record of what you're doing, the launch of which had to be delayed owing to serious security issues with its initial implementation — has been available only on devices powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X family of processors, including the Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows. Recent processor launches from Intel and AMD, including the AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series and Intel Core Ultra family, have included similar dedicated neural networking co-processors, and now Microsoft is expanding Copilot plus to these platforms too.
Those with compatible AMD and Intel systems will see Copilot+ functionality — including live captioning and translation, generative AI image creation in Microsoft Paint and Photos, and AI-powered effects in Windows Studio — rolling out in updates starting in November. Recall, meanwhile, is still being held back, with an updated preview version scheduled for Windows Insider members in October.
