Personal robots definitely aren’t a new idea, and it’s really hard to make an impact in an industry full of prototypes and concepts. But, despite that difficulty, Misty Robotics was able to create a buzz at January’s CES in Las Vegas with their Misty I personal robot. Now they’re running a crowdfunding campaign to put the new Misty II into consumer hands.

Misty Robotics spun off from Boulder, Colorado’s Sphero, which is a company known for their robot toys — particularly their Star Wars’ BB-8 toy. But, Misty Robotics seems to be primarily focused on creating more practical robots. That’s apparent when you look at Misty II’s capabilities and specs. It can move autonomously, recognize faces, create 3D maps of its environment, and take spoken commands, just to name a few.

Packed inside are two Qualcomm SnapDragon processors running Windows 10 IoT Core and Android 7, a 3D Occipital sensor, a 4K Sony camera, and eight time-of-flight sensors. That’s in addition to the various motors and servos needed for movement. However, what makes Misty II especially memorable is the friendly design that features a friendly face displayed on a LCD built into the head.

The crowdfunding campaign is already running on the Misty Robotics website. For $1,499, you can get a Misty II Founder Edition, with other packages going up in price from there. Campaign backers should have their Misty IIs shipped on December 4th.
