This past September we covered an amazing robotic coffee maker called Mugsy, and teased you with the possibility that it might become available to consumers. Well, coffee lovers rejoice, because now it is! Mugsy creator Matthew Oswald has launched the high-tech coffee maker on Kickstarter, and this is one campaign caffeine addicts will want to get in on.
The campaign is already fully funded—in fact, it’s reached almost twice the goal—but you still have a couple of days to back it, so that you can be one of the first to get a Mugsy. If you missed our original article on Mugsy, you may be wondering why we’re making a big deal about a coffee maker. So, we’ll break down why Mugsy is special.
Most importantly for coffee aficionados is the fact that Mugsy makes high-quality coffee. It uses a steel conical burr grinder to turn whole beans into perfect grounds, and the pour-over brewing method for full, rich flavor. What makes Mugsy really stand out, however, are the multitude of tech features that make brewing a cup o’ Joe easier and more customizable than ever before.
Mugsy’s brain is a Raspberry Pi, which allows for a plethora of sophisticated features. Every step of the brewing process can be dialed in exactly to your tastes, including grind size, water temperature, pour-over speed, and more. An RFID-system enables you to store your perfect recipe right in your mug, so Mugsy always knows how you like your coffee.
If you’re new to pour-over brewing, Mugsy can also take care of those details for you. Simply scan the barcode on your bag of coffee beans, and Mugsy will look up a fantastic recipe to get you going. Getting your brew started is also easy: you can Tweet or text Mugsy (along with many more options) to get the process going, or let Mugsy learn your habits so that you’ve got a hot cup of coffee as soon as you roll out of bed.
The Kickstarter campaign ends on March 30th, so you’ve only got a few days left to get your own Mugsy. If you have your own Raspberry Pi, you can get the DIY kit for just $150, while a fully assembled Mugsy with a Pi included is $250. Orders are expected to ship in November.
