The Nintendo Switch was launched back in 2017 and has remained a popular gaming console with an estimated 52-million units shipped since its release. The game platform comes equipped with wireless Joy-Con controllers attached to the sides for handheld-style playing. Still, like every game console, manufacturers have produced a myriad of alternative aftermarket controllers for gameplay. Nintendo fans can now use the official controllers from past consoles as well, thanks to Nullstalgia’s NullWiiCon adapter, which pairs NES, SNES, and classic Wii controllers with the Switch.

Nullstalgia explains, “NullWiiCon is a custom adapter that works with Classic Controllers and compatibles to make them act as a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for use on a Nintendo Switch. Additionally, it can act as an XInput device for games/software that does not work with Generic DirectInput Gamepads.” The adapter was designed around an ATmega32U4 microcontroller, programmable button, status LEDs, and a series of dipswitches for engaging different gamepads.

As with most modern controllers, the adapter lets users configure gamepad buttons and joysticks; for example, you can change the SNES shoulder buttons to act as “LR, ZL/ZR” or both. Users can also convert the D-pad to serve as an analog left-side joystick if needed.

On an interesting note, the NullWiiCon has been OSHWA certified (US000234), meaning the hardware is entirely open source, so anyone can build a copy of the adapter, or modify it to different specifications. For those who would prefer to buy the NullWiiCon, it is currently listed on Tindie for $24.99.
