Particle Opens Pre-Orders for the Monitor One, Its Customizable Modular IoT Gateway

With LTE CAT-M1 connectivity, a GNSS receiver, and easy expansion through modular add-on boards, the Monitor One aims at the industrial IoT.

Internet of Things (IoT) specialist Particle has opened pre-orders for its Monitor One Developer Edition, a customizable gateway designed for keeping an eye on sensor networks, industrial equipment, and more.

"Unlike standard IoT gateways on the market, Monitor One can be perfectly customized to suit the unique requirements of every industrial monitoring use case," Particle's Raniz Bordoloi claims of the new board. "Customers can now bypass traditional barriers to entry and gain immediate visibility into their existing machines and assets, no matter where they are deployed, without any of the development headaches and engineering overheads."

The Developer Edition comes with a base-model Monitor One board pre-mounted in an IP67-rated waterproof housing with a flexible mounting plate and two expansion cards: the I/O Card, which offers CAN, Modbus, and RS-485 connectivity, 0-10V inputs, and a dry contact relay output; and the Prototype Card, a custom perf board for tinkerers to build their own add-on hardware for the gateway board.

"Optimized for rapid evaluation," Bordoloi says, "the Monitor One Developer Edition is designed with simplicity in mind to enable our customers to create a working proof-of-concept in a day. It features everything a user might need for their prototyping needs, including two add-ons, expansion cards for customizing I/Os quickly and easily."

All Monitor One boards include a system-on-module with cellular modem β€” LTE CAT-M1, in the case of the North American variant, with support for AT&T and T-Mobile networks and Verizon available as an option for Particle's Professional- and Enterprise-tier customers β€” Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, and an on-board microcontroller. The system design and firmware are available under an open-source license, Particle has confirmed, for deeper customization.

The Monitor One Developer Edition is now available to order for $199 from the Particle Store, a claimed $90 discount over the device's planned retail price; hardware is due to ship in November.
