Remote control units most commonly use infrared (IR) signals to control things, but now, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, there are other options on the table. Interestingly, while IR controllers need to roughly be pointed at the thing you’re controlling, this isn’t necessary for other methods. Sevenhugs, however, uses physical aiming to identify what gadget like to for its “universal” remote.

The aptly named Smart Remote not only commands what you’re pointing at, a high-def touchscreen will instantly change based on the situation. So if you point at your TV, an intuitive interface will pop up, while pointing at a lights or a thermostat would display something different.

This is all accomplished using an internal motion sensor, as well as three indoor positioning sensors to give the device’s position. Just point, click, and Smart Remote takes care of the rest via IR, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

Say you want to control an appliance that’s located near other ones, like a media player below your TV or perhaps a light next to your speaker. Simply use its selection carousel to choose the device and its display will automatically appear at the top of the remote.

What’s more, don’t you just hate when you can’t find your TV clicker? That’ll never happen with Smart Remote. Press the lost and found button on the charging base to make it ring. Problem solved!

It’s a clever idea, and available now as a Kickstarter campaign to be delivered in mid-2017.
