Raspberry Pi Launches Its Portrait-Format 7" Touch Display 2
Targeting homebrew tablets and related human-interface projects, this 720p display is driven entirely over a MIPI DSI connection.
Continuing a breakneck launch pace, Raspberry Pi has unveiled its latest hardware product: a second-generation touchscreen display, sensibly dubbed the Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 — featuring a portrait format that matches well to homebrew tablet designs.
"Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 is a 7" portrait touchscreen display for Raspberry Pi, for interactive projects like tablets, entertainment systems, and information dashboards," the company says of its latest launch. "It is powered from a Raspberry Pi; no separate power supply is required."
The 7" display has a 720×1280 native resolution with a 24-bit full-color panel and a claimed 85-degree viewing angle, driven from a Raspberry Pi's MIPI Display Serial Interface (DSI) connector. Power is drawn from the Raspberry Pi's general-purpose input/output (GPIO) header through a supplied two-pin cable — which does mean the board can't be used alongside Hardware Attached on Top (HAT) boards that don't expose the power pins, like the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+, unless you add longer pins.
The display's touchscreen layer is true capacitive delivering five-point touch, and ties in nicely to the onscreen keyboard added in the latest release of Raspberry Pi OS. It's also controlled over the same MIPI DSI cable, included in the bundle, as the video signal — meaning there's no need to tie up a USB port.
Raspberry Pi says the board is compatible with "all Raspberry Pi computers from Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ onwards" — with one major exception: it can't be used with the Raspberry Pi Zero family, as they lack a MIPI DSI output. The pack includes the display, power cable, full-size and miniature MIPI DSI flat flexible circuits (FFCs), and eight mounting screws; it does not, however, include a stand for upright desktop use.
The Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 is now available to order from Raspberry Pi's official resellers, priced at $60.
