Cases for Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, BeagleBones, and other development boards are a dime a dozen. If you’ve got access to a 3D printer, it’s easy to just print one from Thingiverse and then get on with your project. If you don’t have a 3D printer, cases can be found from retailers all over the internet — usually for less than $10.
Sometimes, however, your project calls for something a bit tougher than the standard fare. Maybe you’re deploying a device that needs to withstand the elemnts. Maybe it needs to stand up to drops and shocks. After all, not every project gets the luxury of sitting on a desk in a climate-controlled room.
That’s why we’re talking about the Rubicon, a case that costs three to four times as much as most other cases on the market. But, that extra cost could very well be worth it if your project is going to see action in a harsh environment. The Rubicon is a multi-part and stackable enclosure, with each section made from Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) which withstands the elements better than the usual ABS. It’s IP67 rated, which means it’s dustproof and waterproof down to one meter for 30 minutes.
While the standard Rubicon case has been available for a while, OpenH (its creators) are currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Crowd Supply for a special edition version. This Crowd Supply-only edition comes in a nice teal color, ships with an addition clear cover, and even includes a heatsink that’s compatible with Raspberry Pis. That heatsink, which diffuses heat through the aluminum base, is advertised as lowering processor temperatures on a Raspberry Pi by 20° C in outdoor conditions.
