Seeed Studio has announced a third variant of its Wio Tracker 1110 LoRa-connected development board, this time as part of a bundle that adds everything you need to begin experimenting with the Meshtastic mesh networking project: the Wio Tracker 110 Dev Kit for Meshtastic.

"You might notice that we already made various versions of the Wio Tracker 1110 Dev Board available for LoRaWAN and Sidewalk (two popular protocols based on LoRa modulation)," Seeed's Zero Zhang writes of the latest entry in the family. "However, Meshtastic, as an emerging network protocol with LoRa as its backbone, covers a wide range of use cases thanks to its open source, decentralized, encrypted communication, and cost-effectiveness. That's why we’re now releasing this Meshtastic version."

The new bundle combiners the Wio Tracker 1110 development board, built around the Semtech LR1110 LoRa transceiver and a Nordic nRF52840 system-on-chip, with Grove-connected breakouts for a 0.96" OLED display and a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver. With the Meshtastic firmware running on the Wio Tracker, it's everything you need to experiment with peer-to-peer LoRa mesh networking — unless you have no nearby Meshtastic nodes, in which case you'd need a second bundle too.

While the kit has been finalized and is available to order now, Seeed is still soliciting feedback for one extra accessory that could be included in future versions of the bundle: a case. "Our product team has made two different enclosures for the kit, available for free download on our product page for you to fabricate," Zhang explains. "They are a 3D-printed version and an acrylic laser-cut version."

For those who already own a Wio Tracker 1110 board, there's no need to buy a whole new bundle: Seeed has published instructions on replacing the default firmware with the Meshtastic firmware — though you'll still need a GPS receiver and a display.

The Wio Tracker 1110 Dev Kit for Meshtastic is available to order on the Seeed Studio store at $49.90; the first 100 orders can receive a 20 per cent discount using the voucher code "Meshtastic."
