The Solder Ninja Pen, designed by Nicolas Schurando of Sitron Labs, revolutionizes USB-powered soldering irons by addressing the need for versatile tip options. Utilizing the widely available Weller RT series hot-swappable tips, this innovative tool replaces the cumbersome adapter and header unit with a sleek handheld solution. This open source soldering iron project promises to be a versatile addition to any electronics toolkit.

Solder Ninja Pen embraces the versatility of Weller RT series tips. (Note: This project is not endorsed or affiliated with Weller Tools.) These existing tips have options for soldering small parts as tiny as 01005 to tackling heavy-duty soldering of ground planes. Each tip is a hot-swappable 3.5-millimeter plug. This sleek handheld USB-powered soldering iron replaces the adapter and header unit typically used with the RT series tips for a compact all-in-one solution.

Encased in an anodized machined aluminum body, the Solder Ninja Pen houses the electronics, an OLED screen, push buttons, a 3.5-millimeter jack, and a USB-C connector. A Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller operates the heating circuit and accepts inputs from two sensors. An STMicroelectronics LIS2DH12 accelerometer detects when the iron is idle or no longer in use, while a magnet sensor can tell when the iron is in a stand. These subtle features make the iron safer, extend tip life, and save power.

The USB-C connector supports multiple charging (or power) methods for maximum compatibility with USB power adapters. The Solder Ninja Pen operates from 7.5 to 45 watts. Schurando says the tip heats up to 350°C in a scant four seconds when powered at 45 watts.

Schurando open sourced the design. The schematic is already available in this GitHub repository. If you want to buy one, visit the Solder Ninja Pen Crowd Supply campaign page. The project is currently in pre-launch status, so sign up for notifications to stay updated when it goes live.
