SparkFun introduced a DIY version of the Experiential Robotics Platform (XRP). XRP is a collaboration of DEKA, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Raspberry Pi, STMicroelectronics, Digi-Key, and Dagurobot to create an entry-level open source robotics platform accessible to people of all ages and experience levels. The platform includes a hardware kit, a coding environment, and online educational modules. This reduced-cost kit contains the same electronics but no chassis. However, you can still 3D print one!

In July 2023, we covered SparkFun's XRP beta program announcement. Since then, SparkFun says New Hampshire Schools launched a STEM initiative to introduce 5,500 XRP kits into classroom grades 6 through 12!

This new XRP hardware kit has a slightly lower selling price than the original. It features the same electronics as the previous kit but does not contain the plastic chassis. Instead, users are encouraged to print one or design their own.

The electronics include an XRP controller board consisting of a Raspberry Pi Pico W and support electronics. Other components in the kit include an ultrasonic distance sensor, a servo, motors, a battery holder, and basic mechanical pieces.

WPI's OpenSTEM GitHub repository has the 3D-printable 3MF files for the chassis. The repo contains a battery cover, clips, brackets, and a single-part frame.

The new DIY XRP Kit is available for $94.95. SparkFun also offers just the XRP chassis for $34.95. Like the previous kit, SparkFun says discounts are available for STEM programs.
