SparkFun Launches New Qwiic Barometer, Accelerometer Boards — in Standard and Micro Sizes

Full-size sensor boards boast two Qwiic connectors and through-hole pin headers, while the micro variants offer a minimal footprint.

SparkFun has launched a pair of new sensor boards, for environmental monitoring and movement projects, with Qwiic connectors — and is making them available in "Standard Size" and "Micro Size" variants at launch.

The latest entries in SparkFun's range of Qwiic-connected solderless sensor breakouts, the SparkFun Absolute Digital Barometer and Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakouts each come in two sizes. The "Standard Size" variant features two Qwiic connectors, one at either end, and 2.54mm pin headers for those who want to use the breakout with a breadboard; the "Micro Size" version drops to a single Qwiic connector and no pin headers. Otherwise, the two versions are identical — bar a $1 premium on the more compact versions.

The SparkFun Absolute Digital Barometer Breakout is built around STMicro's LPS28DFW, a water-resistant barometer sensor with two full-scale measurement ranges of 60-1,260hPa and 260-4,060hPa with a claimed accuracy of 0.5hPa.

"The LPS28DFW is an absolute barometer with a water-resistant package," the company explains, "making it perfect for pressure measurement applications where the sensor is exposed to or even submerged in water" — though that suggestion is partnered with a warning that the rest of the board is not so protected, and should be covered in conformal coating if water exposure is expected.

The SparkFun Triple Axis Accelerometer Breakout, meanwhile, uses the Bosh Sensortech BMA400 sensor, giving it a full-scale acceleration range of ±2/±4/±8/±16g with a claimed sub-14.5µA power draw at its highest-performance setting. The sensor also includes interrupts for low-power and wakeup modes, a step counter, motion detection, orientation detection, tap/double-tap interaction, and activity recognition for standing still, walking, and running.

The two boards and two variants each are all now available on the SparkFun store, priced at $24.95 for the full-size Absolute Digital Barometer or $25.95 for the micro-sized variant and $8.95 for the Triple Axis Accelerometer or $9.95 for the micro-sized variant, all excluding volume discounts. More information are available in the barometer and accelerometer hookup guides.
