SparkFun's Latest Automatic DataLogger IoT Board Drops the IMU, Shaves $20 Off the Price

Just connect your sensors via Qwiic and start logging — no code necessary, SparkFun says.

SparkFun has announced the launch of a new lower-cost data-logging board, designed for the Internet of Things (IoT): the Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32E-based SparkFun DataLogger IoT, boasting automatic detection and configuration of a range of Qwiic sensor breakouts.

"The SparkFun DataLogger IoT is a data logger that comes preprogrammed to automatically log GPS and various pressure, humidity, and distance sensors. All without writing a single line of code," explains SparkFun's Chris McCarty of the board. "The DataLogger automatically detects, configures, and logs Qwiic sensors. It was specifically designed for users who just need to capture a lot of data to a CSV or JSON file and get back to their more extensive project."

Built around an Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32E module, the unit can log to a microSD card or wirelessly to a remote service — hence the 'IoT" in its name. Its biggest selling point, though: automatic detection of a wide range of SparkFun's Qwiic sensor breakout boards, including any u-blox Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modules, distance sensors, environmental sensors, power meters, and biometric sensors.

Each of these sensor, once connected, will start logging automatically — with no need to write any code or import any libraries. For those who need to integrate the board into a broader project, various features are brought out to 0.1" pin headers along the side.

The new SparkFun DataLogger IoT is based on the company's earlier DataLogger IoT 9DoF, which includes an integrated nine-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) comprised of the STMicroelectronics ISM330DHCX and MEMSIC MMC5983MA. The new version drops this, shaving $20 from the price to make the unit more affordable for the maker on a budget.

The SparkFun IoT DataLogger is now available on the company's web store for 54.95 before volume discounts; it is being sold alongside the original 9DoF variant, which remains available at $74.95.
