The DepthAI Development Board Is Designed Around the Myriad X SoM

AI startup Luxonis is set to release their DepthAI development board that combines neural inference, depth vision, and tracking as an all-in-one (AIO) solution. The board was initially designed with bicycle safety in mind, as a way to help curb accidents involving distracted drivers. The result of that endeavor produced the Commute Guardian, an AI-powered bike light that detects and prevents from-behind crashes. Luxonis found there wasn’t a good enough embedded platform for the Commute Guardian, so they created their own with the DepthAI.

The board combines an Intel Movidius Myriad X VPU with a Raspberry Pi Compute 3B+ module. The idea here is to offload all the AI, depth vision, and feature tracking processing to the Myriad X, while leaving the Raspberry Pi free to process whatever applications the user requires for their projects.

The DepthAI board offers a pair of OV9282 greyscale cameras, an IMX378 color 12MP camera, a Raspberry Pi Compute Module connector, anda standard Raspberry Pi header. There is also an Raspberry Pi Camera connector, an HDMI and display connector, a LAN9513 for USB and Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, and a USB slave input (for USB booting from CMIO). Rounding out the features are a hard-wired USB 2.0 lane for Myriad X module, 10/100 Ethernet, a micro SD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Luxonis states that the DepthAI development board allows users to embed it at low power with a small footprint that’s easier to integrate into a design, manufacturing line, or even farm equipment if needed. The company is set to launch the DepthAI platform on Crowd Supply, but there’s no word yet on date or pricing.
