The Open Hardware Summit is an annual event produced by OSHWA that brings together designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts from around the world who are passionate about open-source hardware. The summit provides a platform for the exchange of ideas, sharing of knowledge and experiences, and networking opportunities.

Marking its first return to in-person since 2020’s virtual summit, 2023 sees the event once again at NYU in New York City. Hackster is a proud sponsor of the event and has supported many other OSHWA programs such as the Trailblazer Fellowship and Open Hardware Month.

The Open Hardware Summit 2023 is expected to build on the success of previous summits by focusing on emerging trends and sharing best practices in the open source hardware community. Here is the full schedule and below are some of the highlights:

During the summit, Dr. Carlotta Berry will be keynoting on “Robotics for the Streets: Open source robotics for academics and the community." Check out her Hackster Cafe interview with us a year ago at the beginning of her Trailblazer journey, we’re very excited to hear about her progress and roadmap on Lily∞Bot, and to share exciting announcements to be made for our future collaboration bringing her kits to market for the larger global robotics education.

We are also launching Hackster’s first ever fashion-themed contest at the summit when Kitty Yeung delivers her talk on sustainable fashion. The contest hosted by Yeung’s sustainable fashion brand Art by Physicist aims to bring the most cutting-edge wearable technologies to the makers and designers and help them produce and go to market.

In addition to the talks, the Open Hardware Summit also offers a range of workshops. The workshops provide attendees with the opportunity to learn new skills in specific hardware tools and software platforms. We are most excited about the PlanktoScope Workshop by our 2022 Impact Award winner — Manu Prakash and his students from Stanford’s bio-engineering.

The workshop will bring hands-on experience for those who are interested to learn about a new way to map aquatic ecosystems (rivers/oceans/lakes) and how to do high-throughput quantitative imaging of plankton samples with frugal science instruments built with open source hardware.

There are many other talks we’re excited about from the trailblazers we are collaborating with including:

  • Huaishu Peng’s “How to DIY high-resolution flexible (and kirigami) circuits with a fiber laser engraver?” (Watch UMD SMART Lab Hackster Cafe here.)
  • Dahl Winters “OSHW + MBSE for Academic Leadership in Sustainability” (Watch Dahl’s 2022 Impact Summit talk here.)
  • Rianna Trujillo & Becca Sharp “Open Hardware for Culture & History” (Check out MUSEduino project here.)
  • Zsuzsa Marka “Expanding the Open Source Ecosystem in Large Academic Collaborations”
  • Kevin Eliceiri “Open Hardware approaches for Laser Scanning Microscopy”
  • S Wu’s “Reclaiming Looms as Open Hardware”

Tickets are still available for in-person and virtual attendance. Come find us at Open Hardware Summit 2023, and follow us on social media with live event insights and updates! And join the summit's discord server here.
