The Things Indoor Gateway Pro Provides Next-Generation Effortless LoRaWAN Management

Hands-off LoRaWAN gateway connects LoRa devices with The Things Stack in two steps: connect power and register.

At The Things Conference 2024 in Amsterdam, IoT solution provider The Things Industries introduced its next-generation managed LoRaWAN gateway. The Things Indoor Gateway Pro provides a hands-off and fully managed solution for connecting LoRa devices to the internet via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and LTE.

IoT devices can exchange data using LoRa and LoRaWAN. LoRa is a low-power, long-range radio technology that uses unlicensed sub-gigahertz frequency bands. (The bands vary by world region.) LoRaWAN is the communication protocol that operates on top of LoRa, enabling devices to communicate over a wide area network. To communicate with the internet, LoRaWAN needs a gateway.

The Indoor Gateway Pro is a gateway that connects LoRaWAN devices to the internet via an integrated LTE Cat-1 cellular modem, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. The device has two antennas — one for cellular and the other for LoRa. The Wi-Fi antenna is internal.

The Pro follows The Things Industries' previous indoor gateway with several improvements. The LoRa baseband chip is now an eight-channel Semtech SX1302. The upgraded CPU resembles the 240 MHz dual-core Xtensa LX7 in some ESP32 system-on-chips. Together, a single The Indoor Gateway Pro can support thousands of LoRa nodes.

While managing LoRaWAN gateways may seem highly technical, The Things Industries designed The Indoor Gateway Pro with a strong focus on user experience. The Things Industries' zero-touch provisioning simplifies deployment and setup, requiring just two steps: provide power and register the device. Once connected to The Things Stack, users can easily and remotely manage and monitor the gateway (or gateways.)

The Things Stack, The Things Industries' platform for building, operating, and managing LoRaWAN networks, is a comprehensive platform that provides real-time monitoring, alerts, and in-depth analytics. The Things Industries says its device management features, including mTLS for secure communications, firmware over-the-air updates, remote reboot, spectral scan, and smart filtering capabilities, reduce the total cost of ownership for LoRaWAN deployments by 33%.

Customers in Europe (€130 + €5, €50/year) and North America ($150 + $6/month, $50/year) can purchase The Indoor Gateway Pro today from The Things Shop. For more information, visit The Indoor Gateway Pro product page.
