Mejnoun design studio’s Egg, as reported by Creative Applications, “is a time capsule that keeps an object or message secret. At the date and time of your choice, it hatches to reveal its contents.” The idea is that this device can be given to someone else (or even yourself) to give what is inside extra significance, while evoking a sense of anticipation for the unknown, or even the known.

Physically, the Egg is meant to mimic a natural egg’s look, with two rounded halves that latch closed until the designated time – up to five years in the future. The device measures 6cm x 5cm, or about 2.4 inches x 2 inches. When that time is reached, it then “hatches” to reveal its contents, like a chick emerging from its protective chamber. It presents a “chance to choose what will last between us in a world where everything seems ephemeral.” That's assuming, of course, that your definition of not-ephemeral is five years or less.

The Egg is made using thermo-injected plastic for its shape, along with an extremely efficient NFC chip and battery setup. Its button cell battery lasts up to five years, with a reported resting power consumption 10,000 times lower than a television in standby mode.

If you’d like one of these devices, they’re available on Mejnoun.com at a price of 120 Euros for the first 100 pre-orders. The production run will be limited to 2,000, and shipping outside of France (where it is manufactured) may be possible, though it seems you’ll need to ask nicely. While technical details on the design somewhat slim, it could certainly serve as inspiration for your own take on a time capsule device!
