This Walnut and LEGO Cyberdeck Is a Mashup You Can’t Miss
Redditor Kingeorg infused some variety into the community when he built this wood and LEGO cyberdeck.
Most of the cyberdecks we see stick to the conventional cyberpunk aesthetic: gritty, worn plastic and metal, drab colors with bright accents, hard angles, and so on. That’s awesome and we probably won’t ever tire of that design language, but it is nice to see something different every now and then. Redditor Kingeorg certainly provided us with something unique when he built this walnut and LEGO cyberdeck that turned out to be a surprisingly appealing mashup.
LEGO cyberdecks aren’t particularly rare, as the bricks provide an easy way to build sturdy enclosures with a nostalgia bonus. But the addition of walnut here introduces a juxtaposition that shouldn’t work, yet somehow does. The dark grain of the walnut contrasts nicely with the cream-colored LEGO bricks and provides an organic softness that full-LEGO builds lack. The wood work isn’t perfect and it would be nice to see the walnut fitted more seamlessly to the LEGO structure, but it still looks great.
Aside from the unique enclosure, this is a pretty conventional cyberdeck. It has the ultra-wide aspect ratio 7.9” 1280x400 LCD screen from Waveshare that is all the rage in the community right now. That connects to a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W single-board computer and power comes from a 4200mAh battery pack. It has an extremely compact ortholinear 33-key Gherkin keyboard, which is even smaller than Planck models. That results in a total package that is very portable, though it doesn’t fold flat and so the shape is a little awkward.
We don’t expect this to become a big trend in the cyberdeck community, but it is always fun to see someone doing their own thing and adding some variety to community.
